The short answer: 100% yes! Pumpkin is great at regulating a dog’s digestive system. It both firms up loose stools AND helps with constipation. We recommend adding it as a topper to your pup’s raw meals. During the transition to raw, we suggest adding it every day to ensure a smooth switch to their new raw diet.
One important thing to note: when purchasing pumpkin, you’ll want to choose plain, canned, organic pumpkin with nothing added. In other words, 100% pure pumpkin. Please don’t use pumpkin PIE mix, which is loaded with sugars and other seasonings your dog wasn’t designed to digest.
Now that we’ve covered pumpkin…let’s talk about why your dog should also be eating a raw, meat-based diet. Did you know all dogs are anatomically designed to derive nutrients from raw animal protein – including raw bones and fat? Yes, even your furry little lap dog has the right short, simple digestive tract; a high level of hydrochloric acid in their stomachs; and a hinged jaw, all designed to eat and digest raw meat. And the same goes for larger breeds and everything in between.
Dogs can eat raw meat and not get sick because of their digestive system that’s designed to handle bacteria in the gut. Your dog has a highly acidic stomach and natural digestive enzymes that help them process even harmful bacteria without becoming ill.
Of course, the quality of the raw meat and preparation are key to keeping your pup healthy. Always choose high-quality meats that are stored and prepared correctly (i.e. never left at room temperature too long) to avoid any bacteria growth.
At We Feed Raw, we go the extra mile to ensure the food we provide is always safe and healthy. We use only high-quality, human-grade meats and produce our recipes in a USDA-certified facility. We strictly adhere to industry-standard best practices and precautions. All ingredients must comply with rigid incoming quality assurance specifications.
Most importantly: As part of our food safety program, we use HPP (high-pressure processing). High-Pressure Processing is a non-thermal pasteurization technology that employs ultra-high water pressure (up to 87,000 psi) to neutralize food-borne pathogens such as Listeria, E. coli, and Salmonella. Because the process uses pressure rather than heat, there is little to no change in product taste, texture, or nutritional value.

When transitioning your dog to a raw diet, you can use a variety of meats, offal and vegetables. Ideally, you should use foods that are still fresh and haven’t been stored for more than a week. It will be best to feed your dog a smaller amount each day at first, and increase the amount over time. The volume of food needed per day will depend on the size of your dog, so make sure to follow the manufacturers’ recommendations and adjust accordingly.
For more information, consider purchasing raw dog food from a company such as Stella & Chewy’s. This Wisconsin-based company does not use hormones, antibiotics, or other ingredients in their products. It does, however, use high-pressure processing to sterilize its ingredients. This method is similar to pasteurization and can be a safer alternative to traditional pet food.
Another benefit of raw dog food is that it is highly digestible. Unlike cooked meat, raw bones are soft and easy to digest. They are also rich in essential fatty acids and minerals, and help prevent plaque buildup in the mouth. A raw diet can also lead to an increase in energy levels, and a healthier dog.
However, raw dog food may be expensive. In addition to its price, it’s also more difficult to find at pet stores. The cost of shipping, handling, and storage is usually much higher than processed dog food. In addition, freeze-dried food can be a convenient and affordable option to adding raw food to your dog’s diet.
